1000 houses to rise for victims of Sendong SOME 1000 houses will rise on the five-hectare lot donated by Xavier University to displaced families of typhoon Sendong through the Philippine National Red Cross. PNRC chairman Richard Gordon led the groundbreaking rites with Xavier University Chairman Elpidio Paras held at the future resettlement site at the Xavier compound in Barangay Lumbia in Cagayan De Oro. Gordon said this was the first effort from private sectors in partnership with the PNRC to build homes for Sendong victims. He said they will build 1000 houses as soon as the land is ready with basic service facilities and provision for livelihood. Meanwhile, the Red Cross will put up tents on the same site for families sheltered in school buildings who have to move out due to the opening of classes during the first week of January. Gordon had expressed concern for families staying at the school buildings who have to move to other places. He said the Xavier Lumbia site will serve as one of the resettlement areas for the affected families. PNRC Secretary General Gwendolyn Pang noted that apart from relief goods and shelters, the Red Cross also provides water equipment that could supply clean drinking water of 160000 liters for 160000 people in Cagayan de Oro, and 40000 liters for 40000 people in Iligan City.
